Policy
The funding gap for fundamental research in Canada
A new report confirmed that funding for fundamental research in Canada is C$459 million below 2005 levels. Less than 2% of researchers reported that they pursued only fundamental research in 2011–15 compared to 24% in 2006–10.

Trump cuts to NSF mostly rejected by House panel
A US House of Representatives spending panel wants to spare the National Science Foundation from most of the 11% cut that was proposed by President Donald Trump for its 2018 budget. But most observers do not expect Congress to reach a final agreement until well into the 2018 year, which begins October 1.
