The GENETICS 2010: Model Organisms to Human Genetics, meeting registration and housing deadline is fast approaching on May 10. Register now and don’t miss the exciting science from the keynoters, Jeremy Berg (NIGMS/NIH), Carol Greider (The Johns Hopkins Univ) and Gary Ruvkun (Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital) and from the more than 36 presenters at the nine plenary sessions. Make your hotel registration for June 12-15 within the GSA room block at the Sheraton Boston Hotel and be eligible to win a complimentary weekend there.
Now is the time to register for the 2010 Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology Meeting. Early registration ends June 24, 2010, but do it now, before the deadline. Fees go up after that date.
This year’s 51st Drosophila Research Conference in Washington, D.C., broke registration records – nearly 1670 – which gives coordinators of the 52nd Drosophila Research Conference at the Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center in San Diego, California, on March 30 –April 3, 2011 a higher goal to reach. Coordinators Giovanni Bosco (Univ of Arizona, Tucson), Dan Barbash (Cornell Univ) and Leslie Griffith (Brandeis Univ) are beginning preparations for next year, so mark your calendar now for the 2011 date.

Is a name change possible for Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly)? According to an April 7, 2010 report in Nature, the London-based International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature rejected a petition from U.S. geneticist, Kim van der Linde who asked that the name Drosophila melanogaster be protected as the accepted standard of the genus. Van der Linde wanted to make sure that even if the genus was divided, the name D. melanogaster would remain. Throwing out the petition opens up the possibility of renaming not only D. melanogaster, but hundreds of other related species.
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Economic Council have put out a request for information (RFI) to learn how the government can “increase the economic impact of Federal investment in university research and development. . . .” The deadline for submission is April 26, 2010. According to a report in The Chronicle of Higher Education, 32 institutions of higher education, national laboratories and others received more than $1.5 billion in funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act from October through December 2009. Awards
Research!America has opened nominations for its 2011 Advocacy Awards Program. The awards, established in 1996, are to “honor outstanding advocates for medical, health and scientific research.” For information on award categories, nomination and submission procedures, and awardee selection see the link above. The nomination deadline is Monday, May 24, 2010.
May 1, 2010 is the deadline for nominations for the Milstein Prize awarded by the International Society for Interferon and Cytokine Research. According to the ISICR website, “Nominees should be individuals who have made substantive contributions to the interferon/cytokine field over much of their careers, either in basic, clinical or applied research.” For more information and other ISICR awards, see the link above.
