The GSA online nominations site for recommending colleagues to serve on the GSA 2012 Board of Directors is open. All members in good standing can nominate a colleague for Vice President (who will become President in 2013)

The abstract submission site is open for the 18th International C. elegans Meeting, June 22-26, 2011 at UCLA. Deadline for submission: March 24, 2011.
The 26th Fungal Genetics Conference sponsored by GSA is now underway at the Asilomar Conference Grounds, Pacific Grove, California. A record number of registrants – 950 -- are attending. Our thanks to scientific co-chairs, Linda Kohn (Univ of Toronto) and GSA member Steve Osmani (Ohio State Univ), and the other fungal community members and sponsors who are responsible for the success of this meeting.
Mark your calendar to attend the Genetics 2012: Model Organisms to Human Biology meeting, June 17-20, 2012 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. 2008 Nobel laureate and GSA member Martin Chalfie (Columbia Univ) will be providing a keynote address. GSA President Paul Sternberg (USC) and Vice President Phil Hieter (Univ of British Columbia, Vancouver, CA) are the co-chairs of this meeting.

Awards
The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) has opened nominations for the 2011 FASEB Postdoctoral Professional Development and Enrichment Award. A total of six (6) individual awards are available to provide resources to support the development and enrichment of leadership skills and training of postdoctoral fellows or new (within one-year) assistant professors. Congratulations to GSA member and 1981 GSA Medal recipient Beatrice Mintz ( Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA) who received the
6th Annual Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research from the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR). She received the prize “for her discoveries of the relationship between development and cancer, based on construction and analysis of chimeric and transgenic mouse models. Her work has enabled the study of cancer and other genetic diseases to be carried out within the framework of the whole organism.”
Genetics is tops, according to a March 11 article in the Vancouver Sun. The article notes that Thomson Reuters Science Watchhas named genetics research as the hottest research topic for 2010, with seven out of 13 of the most cited researchers working in the field. At the top of the list of authors of the most-cited papers in 2010 is GSA member and past GSA Board of Directors member (1994-96) Eric S. Lander (The Broad Institute, MIT and Harvard Univ).
Legislation
The latest continuing resolution (CR) released by the US House Appropriations Committee on Friday, March 11, contains NO CUTS to National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy Office of Science. This latest CR “will fund most government agencies at FY 2010 levels” through April 8, 2011, according to the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Office of Public Affairs. This CR is necessary since the existing CR funding bill for 2011 expires on March 18. If another short-term bill to continue funding for federal agencies for 2011 is not passed, the government will shut down on that date.
