GSA members are invited to submit nominations for vacancies on the GSA Board of Directors, for three year terms beginning January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2015: Vice President (serves as Vice President in 2013, President in 2014 and Past President in 2015); Secretary; and four Directors.
Members with a broad perspective across model organisms or systems of study are welcome to nominate a colleague or themselves. We also encourage nominations of early-career members and
those from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. Look for e-mails from GSA with the subject line “Call for Nominations for GSA Board of Directors 2013" for the web link. Deadline for nominations: April 20, 2012.
Upcoming
GSA Conference
Deadlines
The deadline to submit abstracts for the
GSA Model Organisms to Human Biology - Cancer Genetics has been extended! The abstract deadline is now April 3, 2012.
Don't miss this meeting, June 17-20 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in
Washington, DC which will link basic research scientists studying cancer in model organisms with those studying cancer in humans.
Nominations for the
Chi-Bin Chien Award to honor the memory of Chi-Bin Chien (1965-2011) by recognizing zebrafish research by a
student, postdoctoral researcher or a recently appointed faculty member
attending the
10th International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics
are being accepted. A cash award and an invitation to speak at the biennial International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics will be presented to the recipient. Deadline: April 1,2012.
GSA
Student Awards
The DEADLINE for
GSA Undergraduate Travel Award
application submissions is Friday, March 30!

between June 1 and November 30,
2012.
Submit your application today!
Applications for the
2012 DeLill Nasser Awards for Professional Development in Genetics will be accepted until
Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Graduate students
and postdoctoral researchers may apply for this
travel award to attend any national or international meeting or to enroll in a laboratory course. Applications are now being accepted to attend meetings or courses
occurring from July 1-December 31, 2012.
The
GSA Journals
In GENETICS this month:
A groundbreaking piece of research, responsible for founding a whole new approach, lay
unpublished for 50 years until this March issue. The paper, with an
introduction by Frank Stahl, who knew the principals and witnessed the fruits of this work,
describes the discovery of “amber” conditional lethal mutants of phage T4. This launched the
systematic study of gene-function relationships in phage
and set in place one of the pillars of genetic analysis.

In G3 this month:
As an initial step toward understanding health disparities and personalized medicine in the Chinese population, a set of
ancestry informative markers (AIM) has been developed
for the Han Chinese population, which includes ~1.226 billion people.

FlyBase Respondents Needed
Attention FlyBase Users: In preparation for the competitive renewal of FlyBase funding from the National Institutes of Health, the
FlyBase Consortium is asking you to
respond to a survey to determine FlyBase priorities for the next five years. It is important that as many people as possible who use the resource, including
graduate students and postdocs
as well as principal investigators, respond to the five to ten minute survey.
Deadline for response: March 31, 2012.
Funding Competition
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has announced an investigator program initiative, to appoint up to
30 new biomedical researchers through a national open competition that represents an investment of
$200 million. Those selected will receive a five-year appointment to HHMI, which is renewable pending favorable scientific review.
Deadline for application: June 13, 2012.
GSA &
GSA Members in the News
Research on
fruit flies developing kidney stones presented by
Julian Dow (Univ of Glasgow, Scotland) at
GSA’s 53rd Annual Drosophila Research Conference in Chicago earlier this month was
highlighted by the BBC News.
In a
Los Angeles Times article, former GSA board member
Michael Snyder (Stanford Univ), discussed having his genome sequenced
and then having his “omics” profile developed over the course of 14 months. What he found was a possible connection between a viral infection he had and the onset of Type 2 diabetes, suggesting future investigation.
Congratulations to
GSA members who are the recipients of awards:
- Eric Lander (Broad institute of Harvard and MIT), and
David Botstein (Princeton) share the
2012 Dan David Future Prize
for contributions to genome research. Lander is a
keynote speaker at GSA’s Model Organisms to Human Biology – Cancer Genetics
meeting this June. Botstein received the
1988 GSA Medal.
- Michael Rosbash (Brandeis Univ) is one of the
2012 Canada Gairdner International Award
recipients along with Jeffrey C. Hall, and Michael W. Young for
elucidating the molecular basis of circadian rhythms
using the fruit fly model system.
