The 2010 Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology Meeting in Vancouver is sure to be exciting; highlighted speakers include Nobel Laureates Paul Nurse, Lee Hartwell and Jack Szostak, as well as Canadian Astronaut/Parliament member Marc Garneau. GSA members are invited to nominate their colleagues for a 2011 GSA Award. These include the GSA Medal, the Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal, the George W. Beadle Award, the Elizabeth Jones Award for Excellence in Education, and the Edward Novitski Prize. Deadline for nominations is September 30.
Students and postdoctoral fellows are invited to apply for one of 12 DeLill Nasser Travel Awards to be made this fall. These awards of $1,000 each defray the cost of travel and accommodations for the recipient to attend a conference, meeting, or course that will significantly contribute to the recipient’s career in genetics. Deadline for applications is September 30.
GENETICS, in collaboration with WormBase and Textpresso, provides interactive journal articles by linking genetic objects in the papers to corresponding pages in WormBase. For now, nine data entities are linked in both HTML and PDF versions of articles. These include genes, protein names, variations, clones, anatomy terms, and author names. Soon the markups will include phenotypes — in particular, short-name phenotypes commonly used by the worm community that are sometimes confusing for readers unfamiliar with C. elegans nomenclature. This collaborative project has pioneered the development of a similar pipeline for other model organism databases, including Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD). The linked articles first appeared in GENETICS during August 2009.
Congratulations to the winners of the 2010 Drosophila Image Award: R. J. Adams, G.B. Blanchard, L.C. Butler, N. Gorfinkiel, A.J. Kabla, N.J. Lawrence, L. Mahadevan, B. Sanson, N.L. Schultz, and D. P. Welchman for their work on Quantitative Gastrulation. Each year, the Drosophila Board and GSA team up to present this award to recognize, celebrate, and encourage the continued generation of compelling images that communicate important biological results relevant to Drosophila.
