If you’re a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow, apply now for a DeLill Nasser Award for Professional Development in Genetics. Up to 12 grants of $1,000 (U.S.) for travel to attend a national or international meeting or laboratory course between January-June 2011 will be awarded. But hurry, the deadline is October 22, 2010.

News About Members
GSA congratulates Susan L. Lindquist (Whitehead Inst/MIT) who has been named by President Barack Obama as one of the 10 recipients of the 2009 National Medal of Science. She, along with the other recipients of the Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, will receive their awards at a White House ceremony later this year.
The 2010 Gruber Genetics Prize will be presented to Gerald Fink (Whitehead Inst/MIT) on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the 60th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics in Washington, D.C. Dr. Fink has done
pioneering work in the field of yeast genetics and the broader field of molecular genetics. Nominations for the 2011 Gruber Genetics Prize are open until December 15, 2010. For more information, see the Gruber website.
Congratulations to Carol Greider (Johns Hopkins Univ Sch of Med), Nobel laureate (2009) who was elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies this month. The IOM “recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health.” New members are elected by the current active members.
Two GSA members have received 2010 NIH Common Fund Awards:
- Haifin Lin (Yale) received a 2010 NIH Director’s Pioneer Award, which supports “individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose pioneering — and possibly transforming approaches
— to major challenges in biomedical and behavioral research.”
- Shai Shaham (Rockefeller Univ) received a 2010 NIH Director’s Transformative R01 Award, which is designed to “encourage exploration of exceptionally innovative and original research ideas that have the potential for extraordinary impact.”
Award Nominations
Nominations for the 2011 Lasker Foundation Awards will open November 1, 2010. Awards are offered in basic medical research, clinical medical research and public service. Deadline for submitting nominations is February 1, 2011.
Funding Opportunity
NIH has announced a new funding opportunity for early career scientists, the NIH Director’s Early Independence Award Program. This program is for exceptional young scientists, who upon the completion of their graduate degree (PhD, MD or equivalent), can bypass the traditional postdoctoral training and move directly into an independent research project. The deadline for application is
January 21, 2011.
Respondents Needed
What are the basic topics in biology all college level biology majors should master before entering higher level biology courses? A committee of the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) is researching this issue and would like you to participate in an
