Attention Drosophila geneticists! Abstract submissions are being accepted for the 53rd Annual Drosophila Genetics Conference (deadline: November 8). Submit your abstract and come join us for the outstanding science, networking, and education programs! Additionally, nominations are now being accepted for the Larry Sandler Award (deadline: December 19). Thesis advisors are encouraged to enter their students for this prestigious award.
Mark your calendar for Model Organisms to Human Biology – Cancer Genetics to be held in Washington, D.C. from June 17 – 21, 2012. This highly interactive meeting provides the opportunity for investigators working with different organisms, including humans, to communicate with each other, exchange ideas, and forge new collaborations. Keynote speakers include Bert Vogelstein, Eric Lander, and Angelika Amon. The meeting will also include a modENCODE symposium featuring talks by Eric Green, Gary Karpen, Robert Waterston, and the newly named Director of NIGMS, Chris Kaiser.
GSA welcomes the Zebrafish community and the 10th International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics, chaired by David Raible (Univ Washington, Seattle). The meeting will be held June 20-24, 2012 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Contact Anne Marie Mahoney with any questions. The meeting website will go live in mid-November.

Congratulations to GSA member Ronald W. Davis (Stanford Univ Sch of Med) who received the 2011
Gruber Genetics Prize of the Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation at the 12th International Congress of Human Genetics on Thursday, October 13th. The award, which includes a gold medal and a $500,000 award, is given annually by The Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Gruber Genetics Prize. Deadline for nominations:
December 15, 2011.
Two GSA members, Sarah Otto (Univ of British Columbia) and Yukiko M. Yamashita (Univ of Michigan, Ann Arbor) have been named as
2011 MacArthur Fellows. Ott is an evolutionary geneticist and Yamashita is a developmental biologist. Each will receive a $500,000 “no strings attached” award that is based on three criteria, “exceptional creativity, promise for important future advances based on a track record of significant accomplishment, and potential for the fellowship to facilitate subsequent creative work,” according to the
MacArthur website.
Policy
NIH has officially announced the selection of Chris Kaiser as the new Director of NIGMS.
NIH Director Francis Collins notes, “Dr. Kaiser has tremendous energy and enthusiasm for research and training—two key components of the
NIGMS mission—that make him ideal for this position. His scientific vision, leadership skills and collaborative spirit are essential assets that will help him guide the Institute during this era of great opportunity.” Dr. Kaiser will start his new position in the
spring of 2012, and will be speaking at GSA’s Model Organisms to Human Biology – Cancer Genetics meeting
in June 2012.
Education and Outreach
Volunteer judges are needed for the
Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from May 13-18, 2012. Intel ISEF is the world’s largest
international pre-college science competition and is a program of Society for Science and the Public.
Fellowships
The L’Oréal USA Fellowships For Women In Science Program has opened its
application website to accept candidates for its 2012 fellowships. Women who are
postdoctoral researchers are awarded $60,000 in addition to a week of professional development workshops facilitated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), L’Oréal’s partner in this endeavor.
Deadline for application: December 15, 2011.
