The deadline for the 2012 GSA Awards has been extended! You now have until
October 17 to nominate your colleagues for the GSA Medal, the
Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal, the George W. Beadle Award, the
Elizabeth Jones Award for Excellence in Education, and the Edward Novitski Prize. Nominate a worthy candidate today!
The deadline for the DeLill Nasser Travel Award applications has also been extended to October 17! Students and postdoctoral fellows are invited to apply for one of 12
DeLill Nasser Travel Awards to be made this fall. These awards of $1,000 each defray the cost of travel and accommodations for the recipient to attend a conference, meeting, or course that will significantly contribute to the recipient’s career in genetics.
We are currently accepting applications for meetings or courses that take place January 1 – June 30, 2012.

Mark your calendar for Model Organisms to Human Biology – Cancer Genetics to be held in
Washington, D.C. from June 17 – 21, 2012. This highly interactive meeting provides the opportunity for investigators working with different organisms, including humans, to
communicate with each other, exchange ideas, and forge new collaborations. Keynote speakers include
Bert Vogelstein, Eric Lander, and
Angelika Amon. The meeting will also include a modENCODE symposium featuring talks by
Eric Green, Gary Karpen,
Robert Waterston, and the as yet to be named Director of NIGMS.
GSA welcomes the Zebrafish community and the 10th International Conference on Zebrafish Development and Genetics, chaired by
David Raible (Univ Washington, Seattle). The meeting will be held June 20-24, 2012 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Contact

Bruce A. Beutler, who shares this award with Jules Hoffman and Ralph M. Steinman. Beutler,

Congratulations to Trudy Mackay, past GSA Treasurer (2006 - 2010), to be honored as one of the
2011 North Carolina Awards recipients for her distinguished leadership in science. The award will be presented to her
November 10, 2011 at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh.
Policy
Last week The White House and the National Science Foundation announced
new workplace flexibility policies for women and men in research careers. Among the best practices that NSF will expand “are ones that will allow researchers to delay or suspend their grants for up to one year in order to care for a newborn or newly adopted child or fulfill other family obligations.”

Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from May 13-18, 2012. Intel ISEF is the world’s largest
international pre-college science competition and is a program of Society for Science and the Public.
